Why do we say “Old as the hills”?

Extremely old; been around forever.

The story

Hills seem to have been there before anyone can remember, so they make a handy yardstick for age. In 1734 a writer noted that valleys were “as old as the Hills,” probably meaning it literally. By 1786 a playwright joked that someone should “fancy him as old as the hills,” and by 1787 it was a jab at a stale idea.
