The story
Engineers draw a “flight envelope” around every plane: the safe limits of speed, height and strain it can handle. Test pilots earned their pay by edging right up to that line to see how far it would stretch. An aviation magazine wrote of pilots set to “push the envelope” in 1978, and Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book The Right Stuff carried it to everyone.
