Why do we say “Eat your words”?

To admit you were wrong and take back what you said.

The story

Picture swallowing back the very words that just came out of your mouth. The idea was already familiar in Shakespeare’s day. In Much Ado About Nothing, Beatrice asks Benedick, “Will you not eat your word?” He answers, “With no sauce that can be devised to it,” meaning he won’t take back a thing.
