The story
Door-to-door sellers were known for wedging a foot in the doorway so it couldn’t be shut before they finished their pitch. A 1907 Indiana paper describes a book peddler doing just that. The move soon became a figure of speech, and by the 1930s actors and job seekers were all trying to get a foot in the door.
