About What's the Magic Word?

The calm of a tile game, the cleverness of a word puzzle. Every day.

It's a calm, clever word puzzle for grown-ups. Tap letter tiles from a stacked board to spell words, the way you clear tiles in mahjong solitaire. Every word you cast lights up letters in a hidden phrase, and you solve it whenever you think you know it. There's no timer.

Every phrase you solve can come with its story: why we say “break the ice”, where a song came from. Some phrases are songs, with their own cards. Every round leaves a short, kind note you can send to someone. A new puzzle comes every day, and it's free in your browser, with iPhone and Android apps coming.

Why it exists

Words have power.

Long before it meant getting the letters right, a spell was simply something said. Say the right words and doors open. Every child learns it with one word: please.

That is the first level of the game, SAY PLEASE, and the idea under all of it: words have power, and kind ones most of all.

English is Tony Le’s second language. As an immigrant learning it, he kept running into sayings that everyone used and nobody explained: why we break the ice, why something is a piece of cake. He never stopped wondering where they came from.

That curiosity is the heart of What’s the Magic Word?, where every phrase you solve comes with its story. Tony is the founder of LFG Ventures and a lifelong fan of good puzzles and long jams (Phish, the Dead, moe., Lettuce), with plenty of soul in between. All of it ended up in this game.

How the stories are made

Checked, and in our own words.

  • Every saying's story and every song's story is checked against real sources and written in our own words. The sources are kept with each card.
  • When nobody knows for sure where a saying comes from, the story says so (“One popular story says…”). No invented dates or quotes.
  • Songs are named only as fact: the song, the artist, the year. No band endorses the game unless it has said so.
  • A song gives the game one short phrase or its title, never more of the lyrics.
  • Every painting is our own. No album covers, logos or photos, and no music: only a link to Listen on Spotify.
