Why do we say “You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours”?

Do me a favor and I’ll do one for you.

The story

Everyone has a spot on their back they can’t reach, so the trade makes perfect sense. An older, funnier version shows up in a London play of 1694: “Scratch my Back, and I’ll claw your Elbow.” By 1821 an upstate New York paper was calling the modern wording a well-worn “vulgar maxim.” A story about sailors trading gentle punishments has no real evidence behind it.
