Why do we say “Sour grapes”?

Pretending you never wanted what you couldn’t get.

The story

It comes from one of Aesop’s ancient Greek fables. A hungry fox spots a bunch of grapes hanging just out of reach, tries and fails to get them, then walks off saying they were probably sour anyway. Retold in English for centuries, the little story gave us a handy name for a sore loser’s excuse.
