Why do we say “Hurry up and wait”?

Rushing to be ready, only to sit around waiting.

The story

Anyone who has served in uniform knows this one. The saying dates from the 1940s and most likely came out of the American armed services, where you might be rushed into line at dawn and then left standing there for hours. Today it fits airports, doctor’s offices and the DMV just as well.
