Jerry Garcia wrote the music and Robert Hunter the words, and it came out on Wake of the Flood in 1973, the first album on the Grateful Dead’s own record label. Hunter tied its opening to a real memory: the great flood that swept away Vanport, Oregon, in 1948, which he witnessed as a boy of six. The album took its name from those lines. The band played the song often in 1973, stretching it into long, sunny jams, then dropped it after February 1974. It stayed away for nearly 19 years, until the Dead brought it back to open a show in Arizona on December 6, 1992, to the delight of longtime fans.
